Transform Green Waste into Natural Fertilizer

Donate Biomass for Compost

Florida Biochar Initiative; is a not-for-profit organization focused on green composting.

FBI picks up and accepts green waste from commercial businesses like Publix and yard waste from residential sources. We use this green waste to make compost, which is used in the biochar making process.
Biochar is produced during pyrolysis, a thermal decomposition of biomass in an oxygen-limited environment. In other words, we are composting green waste with charcoal to stimulate fungal growth and kickstart mother nature to take over with accelerated plant growth.
Although biochar technology is considered a more recent strategy for carbon sequestration, the practice of adding charred biomass to improve soil quality is not new. This process is modeled after a 2,000-year-old practice in the Amazonian basin, where indigenous people created areas of rich, fertile soils called terra preta (meaning “dark earth”).
We make biochar compost available for community gardens and residential gardens contributing locally grown produce to the community.
